Semester 2 Spring 2018

Hi Everyone,
Just a quick update that fitness center hours will be maintained throughout the semester as per normal.  Make sure you take time to thank the supervisors while I am away on surgical leave.

Programming will still be posted for Sports Performance and RTC Judo athletes on the programs page under the Programs link at the top.

t there are tons and tons of programs available through the page archives and a variety under the program tab at the top.  All students are welcome to follow the Sports Performance programs so that they can use the LCI Fit community as a resource to help them with movements they are unsure of.

Exam Break Hours

Here are the hours for during the first week of exam break.

Jan 22 Monday 12 - 2:30
Jan 23 Tuesday 9 - 2:30
Jan 24 Wednesday 8 - 1130
Jan 25 Thursday 8 - 1130

Jan 26 Friday 1115-12

Jan 29 & 30 - Closed

I will be away for surgery from Jan 29 - March 16 but have made arrangements to maintain fitness center hours for afterschool users.  Be sure to thank the individuals supervising during my absence for their time. 

Programming is still available for RTC athletes, Sports Performance courses and general users under the programming tab above.

The Athlete Project

LCI Fitness would like to take a moment to acknowledge and inform you of an amazing opportunity that are Sports Performance class students are currently taking part in.  Travis Steinke (B.Kin./CSCS), from The Athlete Project Athletic Development Program, located at Fuel Lifestyle and Performance, has been volunteering his time for the past 3 weeks in the LCI Fitness Center during class time.  He has been assisting, coaching and helping our young lifters and athletes improve at an alarming rate.  Travis comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience and his coaching within our walls has been invaluable to the progression and refinement of the movement and quality of athletes we are currently producing from our Sports Performance program.

Past athletes, such as Liam Hyland and Colm Guyn, have spent time with Travis and still currently keep connected to him for training.  Many of our current athletes registered in Sports Performance are also training with Travis and the staff at The Athlete Project.  As a result, we are currently exploring options as to how we can work together to provide a service that would help our athletes surpass the competition.  This partnership is based on looking ahead at what is best for the health and longevity of our youth today and in their futures.  If you are unfamiliar with The Athlete Project, it is worth checking out and I highly recommend the product and program to any and all individuals.  If you have any questions you can visit The Athlete Project website for more details and contact them through the site.

Toes Never Go In

Hi All,
I don't normally post in this nature but felt it important that I hit this one. 

I had a young athlete come to me today and tell me that his trainer told him to squat with his "toes in" to overcome the imbalances created by being a hockey player and skating all the time......Now I do not know everything, far from it, and I do not pretend to know everything.  I am always learning and look to our professional community to help inspire that learning and for take home pieces of education.  So I pondered this, I tried this, then I pondered some more, but I came to the same conclusion.  This is ridiculous!

Dear Mr. Trainer,
Please go and do some more reading on foot position, knee/ankle/hip position bio-mechanics before you injure a young athlete or person.  Toes should never point in during the squat.  We can go back and forth over a debate of toes forward vs. toes out, but there is no debate on toes in.  If you seek to fix imbalances, then address imbalances through corrective drills, exercises and positioning cues.

Calling all High School Strength Athletes

Bearspaw Barbell Club out of Calgary will be hosting two high school strongman contests this year.  The contests will be administered and organized by long time strongman competitor Mike De Boer and Bearspaw Barbell Coach and competitor Jesse Roest.  It will have many traditional strongman events in it and looks to be an amazing time for any young strength athletes who may be interested in the sport of Strongman.

May 5, 2018 - Location: Bearspaw Barbell Club/Bearspaw School
